Library Advocacy Organizations Support Educators for America Act

Members of Congress introduced the EDUCATORS for America Act last month. The bill, which aims to “mobilize and support states and local communities in improving the pipeline so that all schools have the diverse educators they should have, to support student development and academic achievement,” authorizes $500 million annually and specifically mentions school librarians as an area of need to be addressed with the funding.

Texas Teachers and Librarians Share Why They’re Fighting for #Freadom

If you’ve tuned in to teacher Instagram or Twitter today, you might have noticed educators and librarians posting the banned books that have made a difference in their lives, using the hashtags #freadom and #txlege. They’re doing it to protest a recent investigation in the Texas state legislature in which districts were asked to review a list of more than 850 books, many of which deal with race, gender, and sexuality, and share how many copies of each book they own and where they store the books, among other questions.

The #FReadom Movement

How We Started: In our previous post, we shared how the #FReadom hashtag was created and its purpose. Hashtag takeover day left our #FReadom Fighters cohort feeling excited, empowered, and wondering what was next. It was SO uplifting to see so many on social media sharing the impact books had on each of us personally. It was also amazing to have a community of readers come together for the #FReadom #txlege Twitter hashtag takeover. The hashtag takeover also engaged authors, students, parents, and organizations. We were inspired and motivated to do more and fight for #FReadom.

My name is Carrie Firestone and I'm a writer, teacher, and community leader. As a child, I spent a lot of time worrying about things like poverty, environmental destruction, and war. I eventually learned to channel that worry into action through teaching, storytelling, civic engagement, and project-based service work.I live in Connecticut with my husband Michael, my teen daughters, and our pit bull, Roxie. I love connecting with the world through travel, researching little pieces of fascinating history, and finding ways to inspire environmental stewardship and social justice work at the local level. I also love The Office, conga lines, hummingbirds, cold coffee, Iceland, the activist Inez Milholland, and BOOKS!
